Akka Mahadevi Caves are naturally formed caves situated amidst the Nallamala Hills, near the Krishna River in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh. These ancient caves are named after the revered 12th-century Veerashaiva saint-poet Akka Mahadevi, known for her devotion to Lord Shiva and her fearless path of renunciation.

Who was Akka Mahadevi?

  • A 12th-century Kannada poet-saint, Akka Mahadevi was a central figure in the Veerashaiva Bhakti movement.

  • She renounced worldly life at a young age and wandered unclothed, immersed in devotion to Lord Shiva (whom she called Chennamallikarjuna).

  • She composed Vachanas — mystical poems that are revered in Kannada literature.

Why are the caves important?

  • According to legend, Akka Mahadevi lived in these caves during her journey of spiritual enlightenment.

  • She performed deep penance and meditation in isolation, connecting with Lord Shiva.

  • The caves are thus seen as sacred ground for seekers, offering a meditative, introspective atmosphere.

Architecture

The caves have natural rock arch at the entrance standing without any support. The caves extend 150 meters deep narrow tunnels, with leading to the Shiva Lingam which is said to have manifested naturally.

Boat Ride to the Caves

Begins from Pathala Ganga or Srisailam boating point which is 18 kms journey. After the boat ride, there’s a 5–10 minute hike to the cave entrance.

  • Is there an entry fee?

    There is usually no entry fee for the temple itself, but charges apply for the boat ride to the caves. Prices can vary depending on the service provider and type of boat.

  • Are there any safety precautions?

    Yes. The caves involve a boat journey and some climbing. Elderly or those with mobility issues should take caution. Life jackets are usually provided by the boat operators.

  • Is photography allowed?

    Photography is allowed in the general area but may be restricted inside certain sacred or sensitive sections of the caves or shrine. Always follow local guidelines.

  • Are there facilities like food and restrooms nearby?

    Facilities are limited or absent near the caves, so plan accordingly.

  • When to get tickets for boat ride to Akka Mahadevi Caves?

Tickets are typically available for purchase starting at 9:00 AM at the Ropeway Center near Haritha Hotel, located at the entrance of Pathala Ganga. The boat rides usually commence around 10:30 AM. As the tickets are issued limitedly people will wait from 6:00 AM to get the tickets.

Location & Access

The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad ~220 km from Srisailam (Approx. 5–6 hours drive). From there hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Srisailam.

The nearest major railway station is Markapur Road (MRK) – ~90 km from Srisailam and Hyderabad (Secunderabad or Kacheguda) – ~220 km. Take a bus or taxi from the station to Srisailam. Markapur Road is the closest, but Hyderabad offers more frequent train services and better road transport to Srisailam.
