Badavilinga Temple – Hampi

About

Badavilinga Temple is a wonderful temple in Hampi dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Hindu deity Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Linga in this temple. Reaching a height of 3 meters, the monolithic shiv linga is made of black stone and is half-submerged in water. Located in a closed chamber with no ceiling, the temple is a prominent place of worship for Shiva devotees.

The Shiva Lingam is located in the midst of the temple surrounded by water. The Lingam is half-drowned in water and Half above the water level. There a myth that one’s wish would be fulfilled if the coin is been landed over the Lingam. The Lingam is a trinity possessing 3 eyes which can be observed. The Shiva Linga has a large pedestal that is circular in shape. It is the yone pitha of the Shiva Linga.  This is due to the fact that the shrine always remains filled with water as a water channel flows through it.

The name is derived from the word ‘Badava’ which means poor as it is believed to be created by a poor woman in the nearby village. It is also known as the Big Shivlinga
