It is one of the popular Chennakeshava Temple of Karnataka. This temple is also known as Vijayanarayana Temple. LordChennakeshava was worshipped as Lord Keshava. It belongs to the 12th Century and is situated on the bank of the River Yagachi in Belur. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Lord Keshava). It is one of the massiveconstructions of the popular list of the Karnataka constructions.
It is reverentially described in medieval Hindu texts, and remains an important pilgrimage site inVaishnavism and is remarkable for its architecture, sculptures, reliefs, friezes as well as its iconography,inscriptions and history.
It’s artwork depicts scenes of secular life in the 12th century, dancers and musicians, as well as a pictorialnarration of Hindu texts such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas through numerousfriezes. It is a Vaishnava temple that reverentially includes many themes from Shaivism and Shaktism, aswell as images of a Jina from Jainism and the Buddha from Buddhism.
It is a testimony to the artistic, cultural and theological perspectives in 12th century South India and theHoysala Empire rule.
