History and Architecture

Once Parvati mocked Shiva’s penance for betterment of the world. Shiva wanted to condemn her act and directed her to go to the earth from Kailasa to do penance. Parvathi in the form of Akilandeswari chose Jambukeswaram [An island filled with white jamun trees where in two rivers Cauvery to the south and Colernoon to the north are flowing] to conduct her penance. She made a Lingam out of water of river Cauvery and commenced her worship. The lingam is known as Water Lingam.

The temple is believed to have been originally built by the Chola Dynasty during the 1st millennium CE, although the present structure has been renovated over the centuries. Along with main deity Lord Jambukeswarar, the goddess  Akilandeswari was also worshipped. The temples total area is 2500 feet in length and 1500 feet wide in breadth. Also the temple has five enclosures separated by four tall walls. The Five Tiered Gopuram at the entrance is impressive, and the intricate carvings and sculptures narrate stories from Hindu mythology. Inside the temple there are numerous carvings, including depictions of Hindu deities, mythological creatures, and scenes from various legends.
