Kalhatta Giri waterfalls – Chikmagalur is also known as Kalahasti Falls is in Kallattipura (KALLATTIGIRI or Kallathigiri), 6 KMs away from Kemmangundi Hill station. A part of the Kudremukh region is associated with Kalahari Falls which cascade down a height of 122m and an ancient temple is built between gaps in the rocks from the time of the Vijay Nagar Empire.

The temple is with three stone carvings of three elephants at the entrance. Water cascade water over these elephants and devotees believes that these waters have the power to cure diseases.

Kalhatti falls has a history that says that Agastya had supplicated from this place. An annual fair of Lord Veerabhadra is held here for three days during March/April which attracts pilgrims from many parts of the state. There is a temple named Veerabhadreshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva which is located just below the Kalhatti falls. Kalhatti Falls also attract nature enthusiasts as the flora and fauna are exemplary. Can also spot wild animals like bears, elephants, and monkeys from time to time.

Trekking at Kallathigiri Falls

The Kallathigiri Falls is a popular destination for trekkers from around the world. The trekking begins from Tarikere, the base camp located 24 kilometers away from the Falls. Generally, the trek is not too steep or difficult and can be enjoyed by both experts and beginners alike. The trail has two paths. One path begins at Tarikere and opens up directly next to the Falls. The other trail goes through the coffee plantations of Blue Mountains Estate.

Usually, a guide is appointed to accompany the trekkers who opt for the latter option. The trekking trail becomes especially adventurous during the winter and monsoon months when the trail becomes slippery and is perfect for thrill-seekers. The trekking trails offers a splendid panoramic view of the rolling green mountains that surround the falls. As an additional perk, once at the top, trekkers can also take a dip in the waters from the Kallathigiri Falls after the tiring trek.
