Sri Chamarajeshwara Swamy Temple

About

This shrine stands as a memorial of Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar and was constructed by his son, Mummadi Krishna Raja Wodeyar. It is most noted for its enormous enclosure with golden pinnacles. The temple features two mandapams, namely the Mukha-Mantapa (an open pillared hall) and the Nandi Mantapam along with a sanctum – Garbhagudi.

The five-story raja gopuram (the royal temple tower) rises to a height of 70 feet from the base area of 232 x 195 sq ft. Adding beauty to the raja gopuram are five shining brass kalasha. At the main entrance of the temple, beautiful carvings of Lord Ganesha (on the left) and Goddess Chamundeshwari (on the right) can be seen. Also, at the doorway, visitors can see an idol of sitting Nandi (the mount of Lord Shiva), made of concrete.

Beautiful motifs of gods and goddesses carved on the mandapams are absolutely beautiful. A huge wall surrounds the main temple, which comprises idols of several deities. There is also a Shiva Linga within the premises, which was brought from Sringeri. This linga was made by the blessings of the originator of Advaita Siddhanta, Adi Shankaracharya. Another highlight of this temple is the Navagrahas (the nine planets) set in front of the Shiva Temple, which looks marvelous during Amavasya (the new moon day).

Paintings and stuccoed images of mythological scenes inspired by Girija Kalyana and Samudra Manthan at the temple are simply stunning. Rituals and special poojas are also conducted during festivals like Shivaratri and Girija Kalyana. In July, Chamarajeshwaraswamy Rathayathra is organized here on a grand scale, which attracts a large number of devotees. There are stages on either side of the temple, where cultural fests are held during special occasions.
