History of Sri Kshetra Horanadu

It is situated on the banks of river Bhadra and known as Sri Adhishakthyathmaka Annapoorneshwari or Sri Kshetra Horanadu Temple and surrounded by the natural vegetation, forest, green lands, and natural beauty of the Western Ghats. The great deity of Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari’s Prathistapana was done by his holiness Agasthya Maharishi several centuries back. The hereditary Dharmakartharu of our family started 400 years back. Till the 5th Dharmakartharu, the temple was having a very small structure surrounded by full of natural vegetation and forest. Even then at least one or more people used to visit the temple, have pooja, and were provided with free food {annaprasadam} and shelter and it is continued till date.

it is believed that Maharshi Agasthya in the 8th century did the prathisthapana/established of goddess Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari here. As per mythology Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati argued. Lord Shiva declared everything in the world including food to be Maya or illusion. To prove the food is not an illusion Goddess Parvati disappeared resulting in nature becoming still. Neither climates changed nor plants grew, causing draught in the world. taking pity Goddess Parvati appeared and distributed food to all. And since then she is called Devi Annapoorna.

There is another very interesting myth related to this temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva beheaded Lord Brahma, and his skull got stuck in Lord Shiva’s hand. He was cursed that till the skull is not full of food or grains, it will stick to his hands, Lord Shiva went everywhere and asked for food but the skull was never full. So he finally went to this temple and Maa Anapoorna filled the skull with grains and reversed Lord Shiva’s curse.
