In the Kalighat neighbourhood of South Kolkata stands one of India’s most revered Shakti temples — so central to the city’s identity that Kolkata’s own name is widely believed to derive from it. Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, and every year during Durga Puja, the temple and the surrounding lanes become one of the most vivid festival scenes in Bengal. Here’s what to know before visiting.

History of the temple

Tradition holds that Kalighat marks the spot where a toe of Goddess Sati’s right foot fell to earth as Lord Shiva carried her body across the sky in grief — one of the defining Shakti Peetha legends. A shrine is believed to have existed here for centuries, with a smaller structure built by King Manasingha in the early 16th century. The temple seen today was constructed in 1809, funded by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family, longtime landholders of the area. The deity’s distinctive image — three large eyes, four arms, and a protruding gilded tongue, carved from black stone — was crafted by the twin saints Atmaram Giri and Brahmananda Giri.

Expect the temple and the surrounding market lanes to be packed through the festival days, with queues running long and the whole neighbourhood taking on a festive, market-fair atmosphere alongside the devotional one.
