About Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu Festival of the deity Lord Shiva. The festival is also known as the “Great Night of Lord Shiva”. According to the mythology, this is the night when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married and the festival is usually observed on the 14th day of the first half of the lunar month of Phalguna.

This year Maha Shivaratri is celebrated on 26 February 2025.

Shivaratri vrat

On Maha Shivaratri Devotees do fasting, offer prayers, meditation and chant’s Lord Name as it is believed that the lord fulfill the wishes and absolve the sins. It is also believed that fasting purifies the body, mind and soul. The vrat continues throughout the day and night.

The Temple is famous for its Vayu Linga and renowned for the Rahu Kethu Poojas. It is located on the banks of the River Swarnamukhi. This temple is one of the important ancient Shiva temples of Southern India.

3. Arunachalam Temple- Tiruvannamalai, Tamilnadu

Arunachalam Temple which is also known as Arulmigu Annamalaiyar Temple. The temple is a fine example of South Indian (Dravidian) architecture and sculpture. The temple was built with a row of stone pillars and sub shrines of many deities including Amman shrine, 9 towers, 5 praharas, many mandapas, and sanctum sanctorum with grand our structures. Many Pilgrims prefer performing Giripradarshanam during full moon night, believing that the positive energy is heightened during this time.

4.  Lingaraja Temple – Bhubneswar, Odisha

Lingaraj is referred to as ‘Swayambhu” – (self-originated Shivling). The temple has been described as “One of the finest examples of purely Hindu Temple in India”. One of the best place to visit for Maha Shivaratri.

5. Murudeshwara Temple-  Bhatkala Taluk, North Canara district in Coastal Karnataka

The temple is located on a hillock which offers a magnificent view of the sea. The temple complex is famous for its tall Shiva statue which is around 37 m high and is the tallest Shiva statue in India. The temple gopura at 237 ft is the 2nd tallest in India.
