Edupayala Temple is one of the most famous and powerful pilgrim destinations in the Telangana region. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kanakadurga. Edupayala Temple is also called as Edupayalu Vana Durga Bhavani Temple.
The temple is built in 12th century. The specialty of this temple is it is formed with the names of seven sages who are famous in the Indian mythology and the names are Jamadagni, Atri, Kasyapa, Viswamitra, Vasistha, Bharadwaja and Gowtama. The location marks the confluences of seven rivulets into the Manjeera River and hence the name Edupayala, which means Edu (seven) and Payalu (streams). Devotees take bath in the Manjeera River.
According to the history, Maharaja Parikshit (the grandson of the Arjuna of Mahabharata) performed “Sarpa Yagya” to get rid of a curse. When Garuda, the eagle, was transporting the snakes used in the Yagna, their blood is said to have fallen at seven different places and place where blood spilled became streams. Recently while constructing a bridge, a layer of ash was found below the Manjeera river bed.
The destination attracts around 30 lakhs devotees annually not only from Telangana State but also from the neighboring states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra to worship to the Goddess Durga.
Edupayala Jathara
Edupayala Jathara is the second biggest festival celebrated in Telangana after Medaram jathara. Also called as Seven Payala jaatara. It is a three-day grand affair celebrated during Shivaratri in the month of February. The festival begins on the day of Shivaratri and is followed by Bandi Utsavam where hundreds of decorated bullock carts from 32 villages go around the temple and concludes with the rathothsavam. Edupayala Jathara starts with the hereditary trustee and Medak legislator offering ‘sari’ to goddess Vana Durga Bhavani. The stage is set for a three-day event attracting more than 5 lakh pilgrims.

By Train: Akkannapet(19.1 Km) & Kamareddy (60 km) is the nearest railheads to Medak having the number of trains to major cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Nanded, Vizag and Hyderabad, etc. Taxi/cabs and buses are also available from the railway station to reach Medak. By Road: There are frequent buses to Medak which is run by Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) connecting to Hyderabad, Warangal, Siddipet, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Sangareddy. Buses can be availed from all important towns and cities up to Medak. The distance to reach Edupayala Temple from Medak to Edupayala is 19.5 Kms. Buses/Taxi are available from Medak to destination.
