History

According to the history, the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is closely tied to the story of the demon Daruka and his wife, who were terrorizing the region. Daruka had a boon that made him invincible, but he was defeated by Lord Shiva. In the battle, Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga at the site of the temple. The name “Nageshwar” is derived from “Naga” (serpent) and “Ishwar” (God), as Lord Shiva is believed to be the ruler of serpents, particularly the serpent king Vasuki.

Architecture

The temple has a distinct and simple architecture with a sanctum housing the Jyotirlinga. The idol of Nageshwar is depicted in a unique form, where the deity is shown with a serpent around his neck, signifying his dominion over serpents. A 25 m tall statue of a sitting Lord Shiva and a large garden with a pond are major attractions of this place.
