About Kadiri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
Nava Narasimha Kshetras are the nine shrines dedicated to Sri Narasimhaswamy as symbols of the Nava Narasimha forms on the Ahobilam hill. Kadiri is one of them. There are two temples dedicated to Sri Narasimha swamy in Kadiri. One is in Kadiri town and the other is on the Khadri hill 2 km away. Swami placed his foot on this hill.
Devotees believe that after the slaying of Hiranyakashipu, all the Brahmins prayed to the Lord to appear as a gentle deity, but the Swami agreed and went ahead and set his foot on a hill and appeared as an archamurti. Devotees believe that the foot on the hill is Swamidani and the lower town is Archamurti. In Sanskrit, Kha means Vishnupadam and Adri means hill.
Due to the presence of Vishnu’s feet, this hill became Kha + Adri, Khadri. Even if the name of the town is Kadiri in the vernacular, the name Vedaranyam is derived from the fact that a Vedic scholar preached the Vedas in the area in the past. Khadri derives its name from the abundance of Khadira trees here.
Devotees believe that Lord Vishnu gave three archa idols to Bhrigu Maharshi, which are the ceremonial idols here. These figures are Narahari, Vasantha Madhav and Vasantha Vallabhudu. Kadiri is also a place famous for its history. A lot of inscriptions have been found here. The Chalukyas erected Goddess Durga here in the 10th century. This temple is said to have been the later Amritavalli Tayaru Mandir.
There is scriptural evidence that the Harijans were allowed to enter the temple the day after the Brahmotsavam during the Harihara Raya a man named Ranganaikadu, a resident of the area, appeared in a dream to Kadiri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple and told him to remove the idol from the mound and build a temple. Later AD. It is known from the inscriptions that the construction of the temple was completed in 1274 during the reign of Sri Veera Bukkaraya. Built on an area of 2.75 acres, the temple is surrounded by high retaining walls and towers on four sides.
Swami Moola Virat is anointed every month on Swati Nakshatra Day. Sweat drops appear on the idol after Swamy Moola wipes Virat after anointing. It is considered by the devotees as the glory of the Lord. Earlier, Bhrigu Maharshi performed penance here to please the Lord. It is said that Swami himself provided the ceremonial idols of Sridevi and Bhudevi at the request of the sage. These were bestowed by Swami in the spring and hence the name Vasantha Vallabhuda. During the 15-day Brahmotsavam, the Swami incarnates devotees in various incarnations.
Large chariot:
As part of the Brahmotsava, a chariot festival is held for the Swami. On that day, millions of devotees come to see the Lord appearing on the chariot of Brahma. The chariot weighs 540 tons and stands 37.5 feet high. The pedestal width in the chariot is 16 feet. This chariot, built 130 years ago, is very large. During this chariot festival, devotees sprinkle pepper, fruits and davan on the Swami. Devotees believe that eating all of these can cure all ailments.
It is believed that Qadri Konda Swami set foot here. 2 km to Kadiri. Swami Padam, the place where the Sapta Rishis performed penance, etc., is located on this hill at a distance of 2 km. During the festival, the idols of the Swami are brought here and worshiped, and taken back in procession to the temple.
