About
The Punyagiri Shiva Temple is nestled amidst lofty hills, waterfalls in the middle of it, and lush greenery with a rich flora and fauna. Uma Kotilingeswara Swamy is a shrine located on the hills.
Devotees believe that if they bathe here and visit Parameswara, also known as Uma Kotilingeswara Swamy, all their sins will be forgiven. Known as Dakshinakashi, this shrine was formerly the abode of many sages who used to perform penance and worship Lord Shiva. In that order Shiva attains enlightenment. That is why here is a story that Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a linga.
Once Virataraju’s brother-in-law dies at the hands of Bhima because he wants Draupadi to disguise himself with his lust. Then Sudeshna Devi, the wife of Virataraju, the sister of Kichaka, mourns immensely the death of her brother. Devotees believe that her favorite deity, Parameswara, threw her turban to satisfy her grief and gave birth to a stream of water, which became popular over time.
Another highlight here is the Ashtika Mandapam. The Shivalingas here are facing upwards. Water is constantly flowing from above. The ashes of the dead are immersed in the same water and patriarchal rites are performed. Hence the name Astika Mantapa. He said that the fort of Keechaka was located in the area now known as Shringavarapukota and that he would use it for his erotic activities.
