About Nizamabad District
Nizamabad district is one of the districts in Telangana, situated at a distance of about 175 km north-west of Hyderabad. From the Nizam of Hyderabad Asaf Jahi VI, who had ruled the Deccan during the 18th century A.D., this district derived its name Nizamabad (Nizam-a-abadi). Originally the district was called Indur, known to have originated in the name of King Indradatta who had ruled this region during the 5th century A.D. During the Prime Minister-ship of Sir Salar Jung-I in 1876 A.D., the district in the Nizam’s Dominion was re-organized, whereupon Indur became a district.
Places to visit in Nizamabad District
- Dichpally Ramalayam — built in the 14th century by the Kakatiya Kings, about 20 km from Nizamabad, with black and white basalt stone architecture.
- Nizamabad Fort — dates to the tenth century, built by the Rashtrakuta Kings.
- Siddulagutta, Armoor — a hilltop complex about 27 km northeast of Nizamabad containing multiple temples, including a Shivalayam and a Ramalayam.
- Bada Pahad Dargah — a Muslim pilgrimage site commemorating Saint Hazrat Syed Sadullah Hussain, about 43 km from Nizamabad.
- Ali Sagar — a reservoir with gardens, fountains and a deer park.
- Ashok Sagar — a landscaped reservoir with a rock garden and boating.
- Sri Ram Sagar — a dam across the Godavari River, about 53 km north of Nizamabad, offering boating and bird-watching.
- Mallaram Forest — woodland about 8 km southwest of Nizamabad, featuring forest treks.
