About 

The temple was declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. This temple was built in 1070 by King Kulottunga I of the Chola dynasty and is referred to as the Chola Monument.

According to the legends, A saint by the name of Kapila Maha Muni instituted the idol of Sri Someswara Swami on a hill. The hill called as Kapila Konda. People used to call it Apilakonda which is eventually becoming Appikonda.
