About Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand was formed as the 27th state of India on 9th November 2000, when it was carved out of northern Uttar Pradesh. There are 13 districts in the state. Out of these 13, seven districts lie in the Garhwal region and the six districts in Kumaon region. The state shares its boundaries with Himachal Pradesh in the North-west and Uttar Pradesh in the south. It has international boundaries with Tibet in North and Nepal in the east. Dehradun is the capital city of the state.
Uttarakhand is a mystical land of mountains and mythologies. Uttarakhand is known as Dev Bhoomi or Land Of Gods with a countless religious sites and welcomes devotees all year round. It is the home land to one of the highest Lord Shiva Temples in the world; Panch Kedar- five temples dedicated to lord Shiva[Kedarnath, Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, Kalpnath]; Panch Badri- five temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu[Badrinath, Yogdhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Vridha Badri and Adi Badri]; Panch Prayag- Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag these five rivers merge into River Alaknanda to ultimately form the holy River Ganges (Ganga); and the most prominent Char Dham[Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath]
The mountains in Uttarakhand are home to rare species of plants and animals which are protected by sanctuaries and reserves. Some of the other places to visit in Uttarakhand are
- Mussoorie: which is also known as Queen of Hill Station is located in the foothills of Himalayas. It is famous for its scenic beauty. Mussoorie is also a Gateway to the Gangotri and the Yamunotri shrines.
- Nainital: Commonly known as the Lake District. This beautiful town in surrounded by seven hills, popularly known as Sapta-Shring.
- Haridwar: Also known as Gateway Of Gods. Haridwar is one of the four holy Indian cities that host the Kumbh Mela.
- Rishikesh: Commonly referred to as the yoga capital of the world. Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas
- Mukteshwar: Mukteshwar is home to a 350-year-old Shiva Temple known as Mukteshwar Dham.
- Nanda Devi: The Nanda Devi is the second tallest mountain in India and the twenty-third highest on the planet. It is about 7,816 metres above sea level. From Mukteswar one can have a good look at this stunning mountain summit.
Climate In Uttarakhand
The climate of Uttarakhand is temperate, marked by seasonal variations in temperature but also affected by tropical monsoon. January is the coldest month, with daily high temperatures averaging below freezing in the north and near 21 °C in the southeast. In the north, July is the hottest month, with temperatures typically rising about 7 °C. In the southeast, May is the warmest month, with daily temperatures normally reaching the low 38 °C from a low around 27 °C. Floods and landslides are problems during the rainy season in the lower stretches of the valleys. In the northern parts of the state, 10 to 15 feet of snowfall is common between December and March.
Trekking
Some of the trekking routes in Uttarakhand are Bageshwar – Sunderdhunga – Pindari – Kafni Glacier trek in the state’s Pithoragarh district. The trekking paths that run along the Munsiyari – Martoli – Milam – Ralam Glacier are equally popular in the area. The Panch Kedar trek is the most popular one in the Garhwal region. These apart, the treks to Hemkund and Roopkund are equally invigorating. Valley of Flowers is another popular spot for trekking.
