History of the temple

The site is centred on what tradition holds to be the prison cell where Vasudeva and Devaki, Krishna’s parents, were held by the tyrant king Kansa, and where Krishna is believed to have been born. A temple has stood here in some form for centuries, but the structure was destroyed multiple times through history — most recently in 1670, when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb had it razed and a mosque built adjacent to the site, a structure that still stands next to the temple complex today.

The land changed hands several times over the following centuries. In February 1944, industrialist and philanthropist Jugal Kishore Birla acquired the 13.37-acre Katra plot after being urged to do so by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. A trust was formed in 1951 to hold and develop the land, construction began in 1953, and the temple complex seen today was completed in 1982.
