Palakollu is one of the 5 shrines known as Pancharamala in Andhra Pradesh. The famous Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple – Palakollu is located here and is dedicated to Lord Rama Seethamma Varla. The temple was built during the Chalukya period in AD. Built-in the 10th-11th century. The dome of the temple is 9 storeys high and stands 125 feet high. It is one of the tallest towers in Andhra Pradesh and shows the sculptural styles of the Chola kings.
Ksheeraramam, one of the Pancharama temples, is the holiest shrine dedicated to ‘Sri Ramalingeswara’ along with Parvati. The Shiva lingam here shines white like thick milk and makes the devotees sleep. Vishnumurti is the agriculturist of this shrine which is dedicated to Lord Shiva by Lord Shiva. Adi Shankaracharya visited this shrine and installed Sri Chakra.
This shrine is also known as Kshirapuri Palakola, Upamanyupuram, in the West Godavari district. It is believed to be the top of the Atmalinga that Kumaraswamy cracked. Ksheera means milk. The town got its name from the name Palakollu. According to local mythology, once Lord Shiva shot an arrow here, milk gushed from the ground.
Palakollu was formerly known as Kshirapuri, Upamanyupuram and Palakolanu. There is a story that this pond was filled with the anointing milk that was done every day and it may have been applied to the area as well as the so-called palakolanu.
Goddess Parvati is enshrined in the walled pavilion opposite the Swami. Next to it are the Subramanya Swamy Temple and the Runahara Ganapati Temple. Devotees believe that visiting this debt-ridden Ganapati will help them get out of debt.
There are 72 pillars made of black stone in the temple mandapa. Inside the temple complex, Gokarneshwara and Ganapati shrines can also be visited. To the right, Subramanya Swamy and Janardhana Swamy shrines with Nandi at the center are situated. Gostani River flows through the town Palakollu and it gets merged with the river Godavari at Narsapur.
The temple complex has many shrines, including Kashi Vishweshwara, Goddess Parvathi, Goddess Lakshmi, Nagareshwara Lingam, Dundi Vigneshwara, Veera Bhadra, Sapta Matrika, Kanaka Durga, Brahma, Saraswathi, Kumara Swamy, Kartikeya, Mahishasura Mardini, Kala Bhairava, Naga sarpa, Nataraja, Dattatreya, Nageshwara, Shaneeshwara, Radha Krishna, Shankara.
The Rajagopuram has 9 floors and stands at a height of 120 feet with magnificent sculptures.
Lord Shiva used to pierce the ground with his trident for a boy who was a devotee of Lord Shiva, formerly known as Upamanyudu.
