About Neelkanth Mahadev Temple
The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a prominent Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated about 12 kms from the town of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. It is perched at an altitude of about 1,330 meters (4,364 feet) above sea level. The temple is present midst of the dense forests of the Rajaji National Park, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding natural beauty. One can see the astonishing Vishnukoot and Brahmakoot hills from here.

History
According to the mythology, it is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva consumed the poison during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) to protect the universe. As the poison began to affect his throat, it turned blue, giving him the name Neelkanth.
