Belagavi (Belgaum) District

Belagavi district, also known as Belgaum district, is in the state of Karnataka, India, and is known as the Sugar Bowl of Karnataka. The district covers an area of about 13,433 sq km and has a population of around 47,79,661 (2011 Census). It was previously known as Venugrama, or Bamboo Village, with antiquity traceable to the 2nd century AD, and is also called Malenadu, or Rain Country. Belagavi sits at a cultural transition zone between Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa, positioned centrally between Mumbai and Bengaluru.
