Khammam District

Khammam District is one of the districts in Telangana state. Its name is said to derive from the Narasimhadri temple built on a hillock in the town, once referred to as ‘Stamba Sikhari’ and later ‘Stambadhri’. The vertical rock beneath the temple is known as ‘Kamba’, and the settlement at the foot of the hill was called Kambamettu, which gradually changed to Khammam matt and finally Khammam.

Places to visit in Khammam District

• kusumanchi sri ganapeshwaralayam shivalayam — a Kakatiya-period temple at Kusumanchi, about 20 km from Khammam, said to house one of the biggest Sivalingams.
• Khammam Fort — built in 950 AD by the Kakatiyas on a granite hilltop.
• Jamalapuram — home to “Telangana Chinna Tirupati”, a Venkateswara Swamy temple believed to be over 1,000 years old, about 85 km from Khammam.
• Kallur — the Lord Venu Gopala Swami Temple, built around 400 years ago, and a Siva temple with five lingas, about 50 km from Khammam.
• Nelakondapally — a Buddhist site about 21 km from Khammam with excavated viharas, stupas and terracotta artefacts dated to the 3rd–4th century AD.
• Neeladri Urban Forest Park, Sathupally — a 150-hectare urban forest park with walking tracks.
• Velugumatla Urban Forest Park — a 220.95-hectare reserve forest with conservation, education and recreation zones.
